Are Asphalt Shingles a Good Roof?

  • Yes, for most homes. Shingles cost less than metal or tile and fit almost any roofline.
  • What they’re made of. A fiberglass mat, coated in asphalt, topped with ceramic-coated mineral granules that block the sun.
  • Three-tab shingles. One flat layer with cutouts. The budget option, and the thinnest.
  • Architectural shingles. Two bonded layers with a thicker, dimensional look. Most Fort Worth homes get these today.
  • Impact-resistant shingles. Built for hail and rated Class 3 or Class 4. Read about impact-resistant shingles before you choose.

How Long Do Asphalt Shingles Last?

  • 15 to 30 years in North Texas. Architectural shingles land at the upper end. Three-tab lands lower.
  • Hail. One storm can end a roof early. Hail knocks granules loose and bruises the mat underneath.
  • Heat and attic ventilation. A hot attic cooks shingles from below. Balanced intake and exhaust vents slow that down.
  • Flashing. Chimneys, walls, valleys and pipe boots leak before the shingles wear out.
  • Install quality. Nail placement, starter strips and underlayment decide whether the roof holds in wind.

What Do Asphalt Shingles Look Like?

Three-tab shingles lie flat in a repeating brick pattern. Architectural shingles have staggered, layered tabs that cast shadow lines, closer to the look of wood shake. Both come in blended colors, and weathered grays and browns are the common picks around Fort Worth. Hold a sample against your own brick in daylight before you pick.

What Fort Worth Clients Say About Texcore Construction

Common Questions

Most fiberglass asphalt shingles carry a Class A fire rating, the highest rating for roof coverings, when installed over the underlayment the manufacturer specifies. A Class A roof resists flame spread from outside sources like embers. Check the wrapper or product sheet for the rating on the shingle you choose.

Both. We replace missing or damaged shingles, reseal flashing and swap out failed pipe boots on a roof repair. If hail or age has worn the whole roof, a roof replacement makes more sense than repeated repairs.

In hail country it’s worth pricing. Class 4 shingles cost more and hold up better to hail. Our impact-resistant shingles page covers the ratings, the cost difference and the insurance question.

From the ground, look for dented gutters and granules collecting at the downspouts. Bruised shingles are hard to see without getting on the roof. We do a free roof inspection with photos, and our storm damage page explains what happens next.
