What Are Impact-Resistant Shingles?
- Shingles built for hail. On the roof they look like architectural shingles. The difference is inside.
- A tougher mat. Some use a reinforced fiberglass mat. Others blend rubber-like polymers into the asphalt, so the shingle flexes under a hit.
- A tested rating. The UL 2218 test drops steel balls on the shingle and checks the back for cracks.
- Class 3 vs Class 4. A Class 3 shingle survives a 1.75-inch steel ball dropped from 17 feet. A Class 4 shingle survives a 2-inch ball from 20 feet. Class 4 is the top rating.
- No shingle is hail-proof. Large or wind-driven hail can still damage a Class 4 roof.
Are Impact-Resistant Shingles Worth It?
- In North Texas, often yes. Hail ends a lot of roofs here early.
- They cost more. The gap depends on the product line and the size of your roof. We price standard and Class 4 shingles on the same estimate so you can compare.
- Insurance. Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof. The discount and its rules belong to your insurer, so ask your own agent before you choose. We don’t promise savings.
- How long you’ll own the house. The longer you stay, the more hail seasons the upgrade covers.
- Lifespan. The rating covers impact. Expect an age range similar to other architectural shingles.

How to Identify Impact-Resistant Shingles
You can’t confirm a Class 4 shingle by looking at the roof from the yard. The manufacturer prints the rating on the bundle wrapper, and some shingles carry a mark on the underside. If you’re buying a house or don’t know what’s up there, ask for the paperwork or the product name from the last roof job. Keep the product documentation from your own install, because your insurer may ask for it.
