What Is Stone-Coated Steel Roofing?
- Steel panels. Stamped steel with a zinc-aluminum coating that resists rust.
- Stone granules. Crushed stone bonded to the surface gives the roof its color and texture.
- Shingle, shake and tile profiles. The panels copy the shape of other roofs.
- Interlocking panels. Each panel locks to the next and fastens to the deck or to battens.
- Light weight. A fraction of the weight of concrete or clay tile, so it suits homes with framing that can’t carry tile.
How Long Does Stone-Coated Steel Last?
- 40 to 70 years. Coating quality and the install decide where a roof lands in that range.
- Hail. Many stone-coated steel products carry a Class 4 impact rating under UL 2218. Check the product sheet for the one you choose.
- Insurance. Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for Class 4 roofs. Ask your own agent. We don’t promise savings.
- Wind. Fasteners and interlocks hold each panel on all four sides.
- Fire. Steel doesn’t burn. Most stone-coated steel assemblies carry a Class A fire rating.

What Does Stone-Coated Steel Look Like?
From the street, most people read it as a shingle, shake or tile roof. Up close you see stone granules over formed steel, in blended earth tones, grays and blacks. Pick a profile that suits the house: tile shapes on stucco and stone, shake or shingle shapes on brick. Ask to see a sample panel in daylight against your own wall.
